What to expect on new boiler installation day: a homeowner's guide

New boiler installation day in Belfast, Bangor and North Down—how long it takes, step-by-step timeline, what to prepare, paperwork you'll receive, and when heating is back on.

Most homeowners have had a boiler service or repair, but a full installation is a different scale of work. Knowing what's going to happen — and how long it will take — removes a lot of the uncertainty. Here's a plain-English walkthrough of what a typical new boiler installation day looks like for homes across Belfast, Bangor, and North Down.

How long does it take?

A standard like-for-like combi boiler replacement in a typical Northern Ireland home takes one full working day — roughly 6 to 8 hours. More complex jobs run into two days:

Job typeTypical duration
Like-for-like combi replacement1 day (6–8 hours)
System boiler replacement with existing cylinder1 day
Back-boiler removal + new combi installation1–2 days
Oil-to-gas conversion with new gas boiler1–2 days (+ network connection day)
Installation requiring significant pipework changes2 days

We'll give you a realistic time estimate when we confirm the booking — not a vague "all day" answer.

What happens, step by step

Morning: arrival and setup (8:00–9:00am)

The engineer arrives, introduces themselves, and does a quick walkthrough of your home — confirming access to the boiler location, flue route, gas meter, and any rooms or radiators they'll need to reach. This is a good moment to flag anything you want to mention (a radiator that's always been cold, a tap with low pressure, etc.).

Dust sheets go down to protect floors and carpets. A good installation team treats your home with respect — tools and parts stay organised, and mess is managed throughout the day.

Draining the system

The heating system is drained down before any work begins. This involves turning off the water supply and releasing pressure from the radiator circuit. Expect some noise — pumps running briefly and water moving through pipes. This typically takes 20–40 minutes.

Removing the old boiler

The old boiler is disconnected from the gas, water, and flue. For back-boiler removals in older Belfast and Holywood terraces, this is the most labour-intensive part of the job — the unit is typically behind a fireplace surround and can be heavy and awkward to extract. The engineer will seal the gas supply safely during this process.

Chemical flush or power flush

Before the new boiler goes in, the system is flushed to remove the sludge and debris that built up around the old boiler. A chemical flush is standard on most jobs. If the system is heavily contaminated, a power flush may have been recommended during the survey — this is a more thorough process using specialist equipment and takes longer. Either way, this step protects your new boiler and is not optional.

Installing the new boiler

The new boiler is mounted, connected to the gas supply, water pipes, and flue. If the flue route has changed (or a new flue is being cut through an external wall), this happens now. Magnetic filter installation — protecting the new boiler from future sludge — happens at this stage too.

Controls and thermostat

Your new controls or smart thermostat are wired in and configured. If you've chosen a Hive, Nest, or similar system, the engineer will walk you through the app setup before leaving.

Commissioning and testing

The system is refilled, pressure checked, and the new boiler fired up for the first time. The engineer runs through a full commissioning procedure — checking gas pressure, flue integrity, radiator heat distribution, and hot water output. Any radiators that need balancing are adjusted at this stage.

Handover (end of day)

The engineer walks you through operating your new boiler and thermostat, answers questions, and leaves you with the commissioning paperwork and warranty documentation. Gas Safe certification for the installation is issued, and a copy is filed with Gas Safe Register.

What you need to do to prepare

  • Clear access to the boiler and the area around it — the engineer needs room to work safely
  • Make sure the gas meter is accessible (not blocked by furniture or storage)
  • If you have a cylinder, airing cupboard, or loft tank — make sure we can get to them
  • Plan for heating and hot water to be off for most of the day
  • Have someone home — or available by phone — to answer any questions that come up during the job

Will you be without heating and hot water all day?

Yes, typically. The system is drained and non-functional while the old boiler is out and the new one is being installed. This is one reason we try to keep installation days as short as possible, and why we give you a realistic time estimate upfront. By late afternoon, the system should be back up and running.

If the property has vulnerable occupants — elderly residents, very young children — let us know when booking and we'll factor this into the plan.

What paperwork should you receive at the end?

  • Gas Safe certificate confirming the installation was completed by a registered engineer
  • Manufacturer's warranty card (completed and registered, or instructions for online registration)
  • Commissioning record showing pressure checks and test results
  • Basic user guide for the new boiler model

If an installer leaves without providing Gas Safe certification, that's a problem. The certificate is your legal proof that the installation was done safely and by a qualified professional.
